In the first of 2 games today #3 ranked Toledo heads to Akron to continue their hot start to the season.
Toledo started off their first drive on the right foot with a 22 yard pass from QB Cade Shippley to TE Bubba Butt.
They then followed that up with an 18 yard reception by RB Bam Bam Calloway.
Shippley went back to back with passes over the middle to Butt to bring Toledo to the 12 yard line.
RB Brock Hemi ended up getting the glory on the drive with a 2 yard TD.
7-0 Toledo.
QB Jess Hall got Akron moving early with a couple of passes to WR Vincent Preston.
Then star RB Fred Setzer broke off a 12 yard run.
Akron’s drive fizzled out and they settled for a field goal.
7-3.
WR Prince Fontana returned the ensuing kick 35 yards giving Toledo solid field position.
Shippley continued to find Butt over the middle before connecting with Bam Bam for a 55 yard receiving TD on Shark Wheel.
14-3 Duggs.
Fred Sezter broke off a 13 yard rush on Akron’s next drive following it up with another 10 yard gain as Duggs’ defense struggled to defend the run.
Jess Hall then broke a couple of tackles on a 36 yard run to bring Akron into the red zone.
Sezter ran in a short TD as Duggs yelled, “My defense sucks” or “My defense is shit.”
One or the other.
14-10 Toledo.
Bam Bam got another 40+ yard reception to kickstart Toledo’s following drive.
Shippley found Butt wide open over the middle again for a 20+ yard gain before fumbling and Akron recovered.
After the review, the ruling on the field was reversed.
Toledo ball.
Butt redeemed himself with a 22 yard catch to bring Toledo inside the 5.
No surprise here, Bam Bam ran in a 2 yard TD.
21-10 Duggs.
Hall threw a tipped interception that left Toledo with great field position.
Right away Shippley found Fontana for a wide open 40 yard TD.
28-10 Toledo.
Terrence Kiniry ran back the kickoff for 40 yards to give Akron a decent chance to score before the half …. until Setzer fumbled away and Toledo recovered.
The review reversed the call and Akron maintained possession.
Shippley threw a pick with 1:40 left in the half after Akron was forced to punt.
After some big gains on the ground from Hall, a couple of Toledo sacks forced a field goal.
28-13 Toledo.
Shippley found WR Anthony Smith to bring TOledo into field goal range on their following drive as the 1st half clock wound down.
Two quick passes to Bam Bam, the 2nd being a 7 yard TD, effectively ended the game in the 1st half.
The 2 point conversion, also to Bam Bam, was the icing on the cake.
36-13 Toledo.
Mercy rule?
A 42 yard return from Kiniry to open the 2nd half showed Akron wasn’t going to completely roll over.
Akron drove down the field into the red zone with relative ease as Duggs lamented that, “Defense is a problem”
Kiniry finished what he started with a 3 yard TD run.
The 2 point conversion was successful.
36-21 Toledo.
A clinical drive from Duggs and Co. finished with a Bo? Hammer short rushing TD.
43-21.
Akron’s defense is a joke.
Akron was forced to punt on their next drive.
Toledo continued to drive down the field with ease, shredding Akron’s so-called “defense.”
Ken Moore got in on the action with a 20 yard reception.
A 12 yard TD pass to Quinn and the XP made it:
50 (Burger)- 21 Toledo.
Robert Roberto set the school record for sacks in a season after his 2nd of the second half.
Another Akron punt.
Shippley found Butt for a 25 yard TD.
This was beyond a rout.
57-21 Toledo.
Akron’s best offense was Hall tucking the ball and running himself.
Roberto also set the single-game MAC sack record with 5??? and also the MAC single-season sack record with his 14th.
Could be off with some of that, don’t fact-check me.
Then Roberto got his 6th sack of the game tying the all-time record.
Hall ran in a short TD.
57-28 Toledo.
Toledo recovered the onside kick.
A something-yard TD from Ken Moore led to:
64-28 Toledo.
Roberto got his 7th sack.
Akron punt.
Shippley threw a pick trying to go for the 70 burger.
Toledo plays a home game against Notre Dame later tonight.
